Edge of Grey Blends Vintage Inspiration with Modern Experimentation
Reno electronic rock duo Edge of Grey continues to evolve its sound, returning to Abbey West Recording to work on new music with engineer Jerry Spikula.
For some artists, inspiration comes from looking back. For others, it’s about pushing forward into unfamiliar territory. For Reno-based duo Edge of Grey, the creative process lives somewhere in between.
Made up of musicians Mark Landucci and David J. Marshall, Edge of Grey draws from the rich textures of 1980s electronic music, analog synthesizers, and guitar-driven rock. But rather than simply recreating the sounds of another era, the duo uses those influences as a foundation for experimentation, combining electronic elements with acoustic and electric guitars, intricate arrangements, and contemporary production techniques.
The result is a sound that bridges decades and genres while maintaining a distinct musical identity.
A Musical Partnership Built Over Time
The story of Edge of Grey stretches back well before the release of their debut album.
Landucci and Marshall’s musical collaboration began with their earlier project, Fresh Ground, where they first explored their shared creative interests. Their musical paths eventually took different directions, but the partnership wasn’t finished.
In the early 2000s, the two returned to making music together, bringing new experiences, influences, and perspectives into their creative process.
That history is an important part of what makes Edge of Grey interesting. Rather than emerging from a single moment or musical trend, the project reflects years of experimentation and a creative relationship that has continued to develop over time.
Their approach embraces both the familiar and the unexpected, drawing inspiration from the music that shaped them while remaining open to new sounds and possibilities.
Where Analog Meets Electronic
One of the defining characteristics of Edge of Grey’s music is its relationship with the sounds of the 1980s.
The era was a particularly influential period for electronic music, as synthesizers, drum machines, and emerging recording technologies transformed how artists approached composition and production.
For Edge of Grey, those textures remain an important source of inspiration.
Their music incorporates electronic soundscapes alongside acoustic and electric guitars, creating arrangements that move between organic instrumentation and synthesized elements. Rock influences intersect with experimental production, resulting in compositions that resist easy categorization.
Rather than relying on nostalgia alone, the duo explores how vintage-inspired sounds can take on new character through modern recording and production.
It’s a balance of musical history and creative curiosity, where the tools and influences of the past become opportunities to create something new.
dissolve: A Debut Album Years in the Making
In 2025, Edge of Grey released dissolve, their debut full-length album.
The nine-track project marked an important milestone for the duo, bringing together the electronic, rock, and experimental influences that have shaped their musical partnership.
As a complete album, dissolve represents more than a collection of individual songs. It reflects the creative development of two musicians whose collaboration has unfolded across different periods of their lives.
The album showcases their interest in layered arrangements, contrasting musical textures, and the intersection of electronic and guitar-based instrumentation.
For listeners drawn to music that moves beyond traditional genre boundaries, dissolve offers an introduction to Edge of Grey’s distinctive approach to songwriting and production.
Back in the Studio at Abbey West Recording
With dissolve released, Edge of Grey is continuing to develop new material.
The duo is currently working with Jerry Spikula, head engineer at Abbey West Recording in Reno, Nevada, on mixing their latest music.
Mixing is an especially important part of the production process for music that incorporates multiple layers of electronic and acoustic instrumentation. Bringing together synthesizers, guitars, effects, and other elements requires careful attention to balance, clarity, dynamics, and the overall sonic character of a song.
It’s a process that involves both technical decisions and creative interpretation, helping the individual elements of a recording work together while preserving the artist’s intended sound.
For Edge of Grey, whose music draws on a wide range of sonic influences, this stage offers another opportunity to refine and shape their evolving musical identity.
The collaboration also highlights the role of professional recording studios in supporting independent musicians as they develop new projects and explore different creative directions.
At Abbey West Recording, we’re always excited to work with artists who bring their own musical perspectives into the studio.
Continuing to Explore What’s Next
After years of collaboration, multiple creative chapters, and the release of their debut album, Edge of Grey is showing no signs of standing still.
Their music reflects a willingness to revisit familiar influences without being limited by them. From the electronic textures of the 1980s to modern experimental arrangements, Landucci and Marshall continue to explore how different sounds, instruments, and production techniques can come together.
As they work on their latest material with Jerry Spikula at Abbey West Recording, we’re looking forward to hearing how their sound continues to develop.
The influences may come from another era, but Edge of Grey’s creative journey is still moving forward.
We’re excited to be part of their next chapter.
